8 IMPORTANT Composition Tips for Better Photos

Hey, lovely people! It’s Abigail from Omni Photography.

Today, let’s chat about something that can transform your photos from static to spectacular – movement! Ever noticed how some photos just pop, with subjects that seem alive and bursting with energy? That's no accident. It’s all about giving your subject a movement prompt, and here’s how you can master this art to avoid awkward stiffness and add dimension and flow to your photos!

Let's jump into some movement prompts YOU can use with your next subject!

1. Dance It Out!

Nothing says movement like dancing. I love to ask my clients what their favorite song is and play it on my phone. I'll encourage them to just have fun with it! And dance or move however feels right. I'll even dance with them!

This is one of my favorite prompts. Not only does it create genuine smiles and laughter, but it also gives your photos an infectious energy that’s impossible to ignore.

2. Walk the Talk

Walking is a natural movement that everyone can do, and it instantly relaxes the body. I love having my subjects walk towards or away from me. It’s simple – just walk and talk as if I’m not even there. Before you know it, we’ll capture a candid moment full of grace and motion. You can take this a step further by changing YOUR angle. Get low to the ground and shoot up. Grab a stool or chair and shoot from up above. Have your subject walk towards you, or walk past you. Each point of view gives your photos a different feel.

3. Play with Props

Props are a photographer’s secret weapon. They give hands something to do, and boy, do they work wonders! Hold a hat, play with a scarf, or let those flowers you're holding gently sway. Props add a touch of spontaneity and are perfect for guiding your subject into natural positions that aren't stiff or awkward. Plus, they help tell your subject's story! Do they play football? Have them throw a football towards you. Do they like to read? Have them turn pages in their favorite story.

4. Laugh Out Loud

Here’s a little secret: laughter creates movement. I often tell a cheesy joke or ask my subjects to laugh on cue. Often a fake laugh becomes a real one. Sometimes I'll ask them to say "Ha, ha, I'm funny," and they will start laughing at the silliness of the sentence.

Laughing photos are just the best!!

5. Twirl for Me

Dresses were made to twirl, and twirling shots are iconic for a reason. Twirls create beautiful flowing movement, with clothing, hair, and leg placement. Twirls can add a whimsical, fairy-tale vibe to your shots. Whether it’s a gentle pivot or a full 360, let’s give it a whirl!

6. The Gentle Touch

Small gestures can create big impacts. Brush your hair away, adjust a collar or sleeve, touch the brim of your hat, and gently touch your cheek with one hand – these tiny movements can add a soft feel to your photos. They’re simple, yet powerful.

7. The Casual Lean

Leaning against something is an easy movement to create relaxed and cool photos. Especially popular with guys. Shift your weight, cross your ankles, and cross your arms.

This easy movement gives your subject an action to focus on while you snap away.

Don't forget to photograph your subject in between actions too. These are the moments to capture truly candid photos.

8. Interactive Duo

If you’re shooting with someone else, interact! Whisper a secret, share a joke, or play a game. Interaction is a goldmine for candid movement and can capture the most genuine emotions and smiles between people.

For couples, I'll have them tickle each other or walk side by side - purposing trying to bump into their partner. The couples will always giggle and focus on each other.

For families, I'll have the parents kiss each other while their kiddos run around them. This works especially well for families with younger children.

There you have it – my 8 tips for adding composition and movement to your photos! Remember, photography is about capturing the essence of life, and nothing says 'this is life' like a bit of motion. So, let’s ditch the stiffness, embrace the flow, and create some magical, lively photos together. Happy shooting! 📸🌟 -Abigail at Omni Photography. ❤️
